Dog Are Fine – Musher is NotSun, Mar. 22nd, 2009

Hardcore Headquarters just got a call from Heather. She says the dogs are doing great but unfortunately she has picked up a virus and is not feeling well.

“I started feeling sick near Koyuk,” said Heather. “I thought it would pass but I am still sick and feeling weak.”

Heather says she still plans on finishing the race but her illness has forced her to stay in Elim a lot longer than she planned.

“My plan was to rest here only four hour or so then head to White Mountain,” Heather said.

She says the 10 member Hardcore Team is doing great. Earp has been the leader most of the race and according to Heather has done a great job.

“Now that they’ve had another long break I hope they get me to White Mountain quickly,” said Heather. “It has been really windy here in Elim so they’ll need me along this run.”

Heather says that the team did all the work on the run from Koyuk because she was sick and basically sat for most of the run.

The Hardcore Team can continue to rest in Elim for a while because there is another musher that is still 70 miles away. Hopefully that will allow her time to recover so she can complete the final 120 miles to Nome.

Still in ElimSun, Mar. 22nd, 2009

Heather and the Hardcore Team remain in Elim. They`ve been there for nearly 20 hours. The other teams that were traveling on a similar schedule with Heather all left the checkpoint two hours ago.

Staff at the Hardcore Headquarters are trying to find out what she has delayed her departure. We had expected her to remain in Elim only 4 to 5 hours because she was only 40 miles from White Mountain where she is required to take an 8 hour rest.

Cousins Show Support for the Hardcore TeamSun, Mar. 22nd, 2009

Last month, the Mid Dakota Clinic in Bismarck, North Dakota had their annual Winter Party. Heather’s cousins, Rachel Ehli, works for the clinic and was one of the primary party planners along with another cousin Cheryl Anderson.

“While planning we decided that we were going to do a coat check and have any tips that were received be donated to Heather’s Hardcore Huskies Team,” said Rachel.

Ehli had 4 middle and high school kids do the coat check, two of which were also Heather’s cousins; Grant Ehli and Mandie Bauer. Grant asked his friend named Jacob to help and Mandie asked her friend Kaeley to help.

The kids did the coat check from 6pm to 10pm and they are proud they raised $250.00.

“They had a lot of fun doing this,” said Ehli. “They had a computer set up with the Hardcore Huskies web page showing and they had an iPod playing a couple Iditarod songs they found on iTunes.”

According to Ehli they each wore a long sleeved t-shirt that Carol Kassian embroidered with Hardcore Huskies on the front.

“They hope to be able to do this again next year!” says Ehli.

All of the Heather’s cousins wish Heather “Good Luck!”

The said they want Heather and the entire Hardcore Tem to know they have a huge group of supporters in Bismarck and they are all cheering them on through every mile!

“We are proud of you and can’t wait to celebrate when you cross the finish line!” Ehli added.

Siirtola’s Mushing Roots Traced to Routt County, CSun, Mar. 22nd, 2009

Lots of folks have asked how Heather got into mushing. The answer is simple. After graduating from Bismarck High School in Bismarck, ND, she moved to Colorado and answered an ad in the local Steamboat Springs news paper.

Hardcore Team Picking Up SpeedSat, Mar. 21st, 2009

Six hours and one minute. That is the length of time it took Heather and her Hardcore Team to cover the 48 miles between Koyuk and Elim, the fastest time of any of the last six teams to make that trip. This means the Hardcore Team has now completed more than 1000 miles of the race and has 123 more to get to Nome.

Race records show the Hardcore Team pulled into the Elim checkpoint at 8:15 PM AKDT (00:15 EDT on 3-22). This has been the fastest Heather has ever completed the last three checkpoints, trimming her previous best by more than 2 hours.

White Mountain and a mandatory 8 hour rest are only 42 miles away so we don’t expect Heather to stay in Elim for more than 4 to 5 hours.
